Through keynotes and case studies, the GIF 09 conference will examine :

Martha HEITZMANN, Vice President, Research and Development

Biography

Dr. Heitzmann is Vice President, Research & Development, for Air Liquide, the world's leading supplier in gases for industry, health and environment. She defines strategic direction and leads the Group's R&D activities at the global level (5 major R&D centers, 3 continents).

Air Liquide's researchers work to improve methods of production and distribution of industrial and medical gases. They also develop new applications for gases, in industries ranging from food to photovoltaics and nano-electronics. Improving energy efficiency through process changes, and developing low-carbon energy solutions are major subjects of research.

Martha serves on a number of boards and committees, including:

Frédérique Sachwald, Head of the Business R&D unit

Biography

Dr. Frédérique Sachwald is Head of the Business R&D unit at the French Ministry of Higher education and Research in Paris. The Business R&D unit manages in particular the French R&D tax credit scheme. Frédérique Sachwald is also involved in a number of studies and working groups on the strategy and evaluation of the French research and innovation policy. She is the French delegate to the OECD Committee for Science and Technology Policy and member of the EU Commission expert group "The role of Community research policy in the knowledge-based economy".
 
Dr Frédérique Sachwald was formerly Head of economic studies at IFRI (French Institute for International Relations, Paris). She has extensively published in the fields of international economics and innovation studies. She has in particular studied the development of global production and innovation networks by companies and their impact on trade, knowledge flows and local economies. Her latest report, available in French and English, deals with the development of open networks of innovation and its consequences for public policies.
 

She has studied at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris and at Cambridge University (UK) and holds her PhD. in Economics from Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.

Wim VANHAVERBEKE , Professor Strategy and Innovation

Biography

Wim Vanhaverbeke is professor Strategy and Organisation at the University of Hasselt in the faculty of Business Economics. He teaches Strategy, Innovation Management, Corporate Venturing new business development and International Management.

He published in international journals as Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science and Organization Studies and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, Strategic Organization, and the International Journal of Technology Marketing.

He is co-editor with Henry Chesbrough and Joel West of Open Innovation : Researching a New Paradigm, a book about the research challenges related to Open Innovation. He is extanding research about open Innovation and open business models by setting up the European Center for Open and Collaborative Innovation and by doing joint research with different universities around the globe.

He is currently working on a book about "Managing and organizing open innovation".

Pia ERKINHEIMO-MENNANDER, Senior Manager, Corporate Strategy

Biography

Pia came to Nokia fall 2007 after working closely with Nokia as Capgemini senior consultant for more than a year.

Currently Pia’s duties contains leading internal crowdsourcing activities, working on company’s mode of operation to make it more supportive towards radical and disruptive innovations as well as developer ecosystem strategy engagement.

Prior to that she worked for a start-up company in the multimedia e-learning and mixed reality domain and as a researcher in the field of Innovation and Knowledge Management (Ph.D. studies LTT Research Ltd + special studies in at the University of California, Haas School of Management). Pia teaches in the University of Helsinki Open University and she has been acting several times as independent expert when developing EU's IST and other research activities and evaluating research proposals. Pia's master's degree contains studies from University of Helsinki (adult education, practical philosophy), Helsinki University of Technology (corporate strategy and industrial engineering) and from University of Minnesota.

Vasu BRIQUEZ, Vice President, Innovation & Core Technology Industry Solutions

Biography

Mrs. Vasu Briquez is the Vice President for Innovation & Core Technology Industry Solutions for Oracle in EMEA.

Vasu is responsible for driving “innovation” as a core process of Oracle EMEA across the Industry, Solution sales and the Consulting business units since October 2000, and chairs the Oracle EMEA Innovation Board. Vasu also heads up the strategy and business development of Oracle's Industry Solutions based on its leading-edge core technology platforms, for EMEA.

Vasu is a member of the Senior Leadership Team of Oracle EMEA.

Previously, Vasu headed up the strategy and business development of the Pervasive Computing Solutions for EMEA, including Wireless, Mobile, Sensor-based, Location-based, M2M solutions. Prior to that, Vasu was the Senior Director of Strategic Planning for Oracle EMEA for the Solutions, Consulting and Strategic Alliances business units for 3 years. She was responsible, in particular, for developing the "E-Business" go-to-market model and driving an integrated go-to-market strategy across these lines of business.

In all, Vasu has 30 years of experience in the IT industry and holds degrees in Physics and Computer Science. Vasu is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Eric De La Fortelle, Global Head, External Research and Technologies

Biography

Dr. Eric de La Fortelle is Global Head, External Research and Technologies for Roche Pharma Partnering in Basel, Switzerland. He heads a group with a mandate to find partners, establish contract and manage global alliances with companies offering innovative technologies for every stage of product discovery, development and life cycle.

Eric is scientist by training, with contributions in the field of structure-based drug design. He has extensive experience of negotiating pharma/biotech alliances (both from the Biotech and the Pharma side). He was trained as an engineer and a physicist at Ecole Centrale de Paris, holds a PhD in Biophysics from Paris XI University, and an MBA from INSEAD.

Michel DESTOT, Member of the French National Assembly and Mayor of Grenoble (Isere)

Biography

Born in 1946, Michel Destot arrived in Grenoble in 1969 upon obtaining an engineering degree from the prestigious Ecole Nationale des Arts et Metiers.
In Grenoble, he completed his thesis in nuclear physics and graduated at the top of his class from the Political Science Institute.
 
Mr. Destot joined the CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) as a researcher in 1973, and became in addition an entrepreneur in 1989, when he founded a successful start-up, Corys. The company has since become one of the world leaders providing simulators both for energy and railway markets.
 
Michel Destot’s political career began in the 1970s. He was elected to France’s National Assembly in 1988 and became Mayor of Grenoble in 1995.
 
Also active on the national stage, Mr. Destot took the lead at a public transport think-tank in 2001 and was elected president of a national guild of municipalities in 2007. In addition, he is currently working with the Minister in charge of Ecology as part of France’s “National Green Plan”.
 
An innovator by nature, he is very supportive of the implantation of new companies in the Grenoble area. Mr. Destot is also deeply involved in the well-being of his fellow citizens and is resolutely facing the global issues of the twenty-first century.
 
Married and the father of three children, Michel Destot is also a passionate mountaineer. He enjoys the local alps and has also traveled extensively,reaching summits such as Mont Cervin in Switzerland, Everest’s Cho-Uyu and Aconcagua in the Andean range.

Monica BELTRAMETTI, Vice President Xerox Research Centre Europe

Biography

Dr. Monica Beltrametti is vice president of the Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) with headquarters in Grenoble, France.

She helped build up the centre creating an international scientific community of about fifteen nationalities. For two years she was vice president and general manager of the Xerox Worldwide Process, Consumer and Utilities Business, with responsibility for the Pharmaceutical, Petroleum & Chemical, Consumer and Utilities industry segments within Xerox Global Services. From 2006 to 2008, Beltrametti was head of Global Technology and Offering Development (GTOD) at Xerox Global Services, a role she took on while continuing her leadership at XRCE.

XRCE's unique competencies in analysing text and images in documents are at the heart of many of the components in the ‘Smarter Document ManagementSM suite and have led to the creation of several new technology-based service offerings at Xerox and Xerox start-ups. Others have been sold to companies with whom Xerox nurtures a business partnership.

She has received awards and fellowships from Xerox, the German, US and Canadian governments, and from research institutions such as the Max Planck Institute.

 

Beltrametti has a PhD in theoretical Astrophysics from the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Munich (Germany).

Chris TOWNSEND, VP Marketing

Biography

Chris Townsend currently serves as VP Marketing for I-Nova Software, an enterprise innovation software and services company based in Lyon, France.

In this position, Chris is responsible for market strategy, product planning, solutions development, strategic partnerships, and publicity channels. Before I-Nova, Chris worked as a Researcher at Forrester Research, where his coverage focused on innovation management best practices at major corporations around the world. Chris has also led Forrester research projects on technology trends in emerging markets such as China and India, and he previously directed survey planning for Forrester’s Business Data Services product.

Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences from Harvard University.
